Kandy was the last capital of the ancient kings’ era of Sri Lanka. It is in the center of Sri Lanka Kandy is one of the most scenic cities in Sri Lanka; it is both an administrative and religious city. The city has a relatively wetter and cooler temperatures. The highlight of the year is the Kandy Esala Perahera, when a replica of the relic casket is taken in procession accompanied by exotically costumed drummers, dancers and about 80 – 100 caparisoned elephants during ten glittering nights in July/ August. The beautiful city, surrounded by hills and valleys, rivers, lakes and cascading waterfalls, boasts of the Royal Botanical gardens at Peradeniya.
Pinnawala orphanage was started in 1975 to house the abandoned and the wounded elephants. The number of elephants has increased to more than 65 now; including baby elephants brought from various parts, as well as the 23 baby elephants born as a result of the captive breeding program. The best time to visit is the feeding time from 0930-1000 hrs and 1330-1400 hrs and the bathing time from 1000-1030 hrs and 1400-1430 hrs when all the elephants are taken to the river close by.
Sigiriya is treated as one of the magnificent creation in the world. It is believed that the path way to Sigiriya was through a Lions mouth. But now only the giant paws of the lion is remaining. The rest of the structure is believed to be decade. Also Sigiriya is world famous for its beautiful drawings. The frescoes of Sigiriya are treated as the oldest drawings in Sri Lanka. These are located in the west side of Sigiriya rock in a cave.
Dambulla is famous for the largest and best preserved cave temple complex of Sri Lanka also known as the Golden Temple of Dambulla was named as one of the World Heritage Sites in 1991. There are over 80 caves in the surrounding and some of them have been used by the monks as meditation locations. Major attractions are spread over 5 caves, which contain the statues and the paintings
Nuwara Eliya is a town in the Central Highlands of Sri Lanka with a picturesque landscape and temperate climate. The town is located overlooking Piduruthalagala, the tallest mountain in Sri Lanka. This city is famous for large tea bushes in Sri Lanka, Hakgala Botanical Garden, Gregory Lake, famous `Worlds End’ as well as Nuwara Eliya Golf Club.
Ella is a very beautiful cool upcountry city of Sri Lanka and it is famous for tourism. It is situated in the Eastern part of misty central hills; 11.5km from Bandarawella. This city is surrounded by a lot of mountains. World famous Ella Gap, Ravana Waterfall, Ravana ancient temple, Dova ancient temple and Nine Arches Bridge are the most popular places to visit.
Anuradhapura which is located in North Central Province; 205km north of Colombo, is one of the most sacred cities in Sri Lanka as many places of Buddhist worship such as Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi, Ruwanweli Dagoba,Mirisawetiya, Isurumuniya, Lovamahapaya etc.. are located in this ancient city. It is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world and one of the eight world heritage sites of Sri Lanka.
Polonnaruwa is also located in the North Central Province. The city is known for its centuries-old irrigated agriculture, ancient Sinhalese kingdom and places of Buddhist worship. Parakarama Samudraya (Sea of Parakrama) was built by King Parakramabahu 1 which is treated as one of the outstanding irrigational work in history of Sri Lanka you can see in Polonnaruwa.
